Transnet Contributes to a Life Skills Training and Job Creation Programme

Learn to earn (Lte), a non-profit skills development organisation situated in the Western Cape received a donation of R 180 000 from Transnet during the last quarter of the 2013/2014 financial year. The Lte programme seeks to eradicate poverty by empowering unemployed and marginalised people in South Africa, especially in the Western Cape where it has put more than 10 000 unemployed adults through market relevant skills training since its inception in 1989. For 20 years, she has successfully headed the Phelophepa initiative and as she exits Transnet on retirement, she takes us through her experiences with the project that has been and will forever remain close to her heart.

The programme trains around 500 people per annum. The courses offered are sewing, woodwork, office management/basic computers, home management, graphic design, business achievers, and bake-for-profit. Students are required to pay approximately 5% of the full course cost, while Transnet Foundation meets the other costs through donations.
Out of the 36 students that have been sponsored by Transnet, 29 have graduated with twenty three of the graduates already employed, representing a 79% success rate of the programme.
The training offered by the organisation recognises the staggering rates of unemployment and focuses on giving not only practical skills but also social skills including modules such as basic financial literacy, understanding rights and responsibilities in the workplace and HIV/AIDS awareness.
