MISTRA consists of a group of South Africans with experience in research, academia, policy making and governance that saw the need to create a platform for engagement around strategic issues facing South Africa. It also applies itself to issues of economics, sociology, history, arts and culture and the logistics of natural sciences. Research programmes are complemented by undertaking strategic reflections in the form of roundtables, retreats, seminars and annual lectures.

The institute draws lessons from the past and contributes towards charting a peaceful future for South Africa. The findings are brought to life by combining academic knowledge and professional experience through a network of highly qualified researchers that MISTRA has forged across universities, research institutes, the private sector and civil society organisations.
