In collaboration with the Department of Basic Education, Transnet Foundation's Socio-Economic Infrastructure Development portfolio on Tuesday (24/05/2016) put together a career guidance day for five schools in Thokoza, in the East Rand.

The schools, namely Landulwazi, Thabo-Nstako, Thoko-Thaba, Tiisetsong and Buhlebuzile gathered at the Sam Ntuli Indoor Centre with each school given an hour to sit in and listen to career advice from Transnet management led by Senior Manager: SEID, Mr Ricky Maharaj. The Transnet Thokoza community centre is a hub where the community can get some information and assists the community's needy in terms of offering them infrastructure.

School children were extremely excited to attend the career advice session as most of them are yet to decide on the career path they would like to embark on after matric. The beginning of one's career choice begins as early as grade 10 since the Matric/National Senior Certificate subjects and marks determines the university entrance and the type of degree, diploma or certificate one will pursue.

Mr Maharaj says for the Transnet Foundation, and the Socio-Economic Infrastructure Development portfolio, creating awareness about Transnet (SOC) Ltd as a company and the career opportunities that may be available is key. He explains that the career awareness or outreach initiative is a project of the Transnet Community Centers in all four provinces.

"The Thokoza Transnet Community Center has arranged, in partnership with the department of education and 5 schools in the Thokoza areas for today's career expo. Over 2 000 school children have benefitted from today's career day / expo.

"Through building infrastructure, Transnet is able to provide a basket of social, educational and safety services to any communities. Very central to the career day is the message of railway safety, creating awareness for people to behave safely around railway crossings and intersections.
