Although South Africa is rich in sporting talent, much of it goes undiscovered because it is hidden away in underdeveloped, far-flung areas and communities. Fortunately, our company does not shy away from these areas, but rather focuses on them and provide real opportunities to youth who fall outside the target areas of traditional sporting bodies. Through our Sport Development Programme, we can identify and develop young sports talent across the country and nurture it to excellence.

Our company’s Port Terminals (TPT) department recently launched its flagship student exposure programme called AIM in KwaZulu-Natal. The intention of this programme is to give youth residing in South Africa’s port cities access to the world of operations, maritime logistics, and the blue economy.

Our company’s flagship CSI project, the Phelophepa healthcare trains, also known as Phelophepa I and II, provide services to rural and semi-rural communities along our operating lines and runs from January to September every year. Both trains are equipped with 19 coaches and state-of-the-art medical facilities, such as a dental clinic, eye clinic, health clinic, psychology clinic, and a pharmacy. Both trains also comprise of a fully equipped kitchen car, dining car, management coach (with boardroom), laundry coach, accommodation coaches (with restrooms), and transports 22 permanent passengers.

With the scarcity of talent and learner support opportunities in South Africa, it is essential for companies to ensure continuous availability of scarce skills to trigger and sustain economic growth. The Transnet Orphaned Youth Education Development Programme (OYEDP) is a critical talent lever to enable our communities to meet the country’s objectives of taking caring of its youth. This programme, which is funded by our Foundation, is targeted to impoverished and vulnerable youth who demonstrate academic potential. The programme comprises of comprehensive packages that cover both financial and developmental support throughout their study periods.

Reading skills are vital for improving the literacy and numeracy skills of learners at all levels. Unfortunately, only 14% of South Africans read books and less than 10% of parents read to their children. Enter the Transnet Foundation’s mobile library programme… aimed at kickstarting a reading phenomenon.
