Studying and working hard doesn’t always prepare one for what real life has in store for them. Sometimes practical experience in a wide range of fields is more beneficial to students in the health sciences, and this proved true for Chané Du Toit, a student studying counselling.

Being a psychology student on rails was probably the last thing on Asisipho Petela’s mind when she registered for her tertiary studies. But she accedes, that the Transnet Foundation’s Phelophepa healthcare train has given her more than she bargained for, in terms of experience.

The prestigious Transnet Rural and Farm Schools Tournament launch in Gauteng was a huge success amongst learners, coaches, and sports officials. But what made the evening such a humbling experience for all involved was seeing first hand the excitement on the faces of the youths. For them, “coming from a rural area, the children were so excited to be in the city. For some, this was their first time here,” said Bakamela Rai, a teacher from Mabela Intermediate School.

The Transnet Foundation, the CSI division of Transnet SOC Limited donated a 10- seater Toyota Quantum to the Alexandra Health Centre and University Clinic based in Alexandra Township, a 10-seater Toyota Quantum.

This prestigious annual sporting event started in 2002 and today sees over 22 000 learners participating in inter‐house competitions during the year, which culminates in a three day long National Tournament. This year over 2000 participants will be uniting for the opening ceremony at the Boksburg Stadium on Monday 1 October.

In South Africa, the month of June is known as “Youth Month”. This is in commemoration of the 16 June 1976 uprising in Sharpeville that made an indelible mark on the political landscape of the country. This year, Youth Month will be commemorated under the theme, "Together We Can Do More to Build Infrastructure and Fight Youth Unemployment, Poverty and Inequality".

South African transport utility Transnet’s healthcare train, Phelophepa, has entered its seventeenth year of providing South Africa’s poor rural com- munities with primary healthcare services, while the State-owned enterprise accelerates plans to significantly expand the long-running corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative from the beginning of next year.

Transnet makes use of sport as a key instrument to help extricate South Africa’s disadvantaged children from the yoke of poverty.
