The 10th of October 2013, buzzed in another list of the annual Transnet awards, an event that officially celebrates the organization‘s everyday heroes. The ever hardworking workforce across all divisions exchanged their everyday office regalia for the fashionable catwalk look as they strut their stuff in the glamour of the evening event.

The Transnet Foundation National Sports Tournament launched on the 23rd of September 2013 to a myriad of funfair at Boksburg Stadium that included South Africa’s sensational artist Doctor Malinga belting out a few of his top hits, showing off his fly-kick and his contagious dance moves to an ecstatic stadium.

It has been 46 years of a successful career at Transnet and this year couldn’t have ended on a more brilliant note for Dr. Lynette Coetzee, founder of the Transnet-Phelophepa Health Care Train. Dr. Coetzee, Senior Manager: Health at the Transnet Foundation and Project Manager of Phelophepa is the first woman in Africa to receive this high accolade and among seven individuals in the world who will be awarded with the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI)’s honorary 2013 membership.

The Transnet Foundation’s Container Assistance Programme portfolio has launched a campaign aimed at highlighting the dangers of rail and train crossings as well as getting some community buy-in on services offered at the Transnet Safety Center in Springs.

Sports tournament for rural kids finishes with an inspiring award ceremony. The prestigious Transnet Rural and Farm Schools Tournament was a huge success with learners, coaches, and sports officials. But what made the event so special and a humbling experience for all involved was seeing first-hand the excitement on the faces of the youths. “Coming from a rural area, the children were so excited to be in the city. For some, this was their first time here” said Bakamela Rai, a teacher from Mabela Intermediate School.

Women in South Africa have come a long way in making their voice heard and fi ghting for their rightful place in society. But in some communities, where poverty forces families to live with the bare necessities, there are women who are ba ling to maintain their dignity and self-esteem. The Transnet Teenage Health Programme is turning this situation around. Through awareness, education and mentoring about feminine health and hygiene, the programme is enabling teenage girls in our country’s poorest communities to embrace their femininity, li their heads, and walk with dignity.

Transnet Foundation’s education portfolio has continued to offer opportunities to both learners as well as teachers. The portfolio, driven by Senior Manager: Education, Ms Theresa Moila has turned producing quality teachers through offering them bursaries to study at university level into a tradition.

The Transnet Foundation is planning a sustainable social investment intervention in the small west coast town of Vredenburg in Saldanha, which includes, amongst other actions the development of the Louwville sports fields in Vredenburg. The project, started in the year 2013 started with the installation of the grand stands where people can sit and watch their matches during weekends.

Transnet Group CEO Brian Molefe took a few hours off his hectic schedule on Monday the 2nd of September, 2013 to visit Transnet sponsored kids at Uplands and Penryn School in Mpumalanga. The visit by the GCEO and other senior officials that included the Head of the Foundation, Cynthia Mgijima and Senior Manager: Education portfolio, Ms Theresa Moila was a follow up to assess the progress of the students who are beneficiaries of the Transnet Foundation Orphaned Youth Education Development Programme.
