Transnet’s Phelophepa Healthcare trains will commence a maintenance programme after servicing over 150 000 patients across the country in the past few months. The two Phelophepa Healthcare trains (I and II) are heading back to Salt River, Cape Town at one of Transnet Engineering’s maintenance site for annual refurbishment programme. The two trains operates simultaneously from January to October offering primary health care to remote communities.

The two Phelophepa Healthcare trains (I and II) are heading back to Salt River, Cape Town at one of Transnet Engineering’s maintenance site for annual refurbishment programme. The two trains operates simultaneously from January to October offering primary health care to remote communities.
The trains will undergo maintenance of its 19 fully equipped coaches from November 2020, which includes conducting top to tail repairs on both trains, maintenance and upgrading the systems inside the trains.
The Phelophepa trains will commence its services and a new route in January 2021.
At the height of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the trains were deployed to KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces to assist the Department of Health with the screening and testing of the virus. A total of 127 153 individuals were screened and tested during this period.
In September, the healthcare trains opened up the rest of the clinics on board the train to provide a full-basket of primary healthcare services including, eye and oral care, screening for HIV and AIDS, psychological services and a registered pharmacy that provides up to schedule 4 medication at a nominal fee. These services reached over 20 000 people from communities in the North West and Gauteng provinces
A total lumber of 8497 spectacles were provided in the two provinces with 11 177 individuals receiving public health education and 13 168 medication dispensed.

This year was unusual; however, through solid partnerships and a dedicated team, we were able to make a huge difference in people’s lives in various parts of the country. We also managed to play a role in the fight against COVID-19," said Molatwane Likhethe, Transnet Head of Foundation.
